South Africa's impeachment committee has sat for the first time, and Cyril Ramaphosa is the first sitting president in this country's democratic history to face this process. Zuma resigned before it got there. Those before him never faced it. Today, it is real, it is moving, and Ramaphosa is doing everything in his legal power to stop it.
In this video we break down what the committee's first sitting actually means, why the Constitutional Court's May 2026 ruling compelled Parliament to act after the ANC buried the Phala Phala report in 2022, and what Ramaphosa's judicial review strategy could mean for his future, including the very real possibility that fighting it legally forces him toward resignation instead.
Then we look at the catastrophe unfolding in Johannesburg. The City owes Eskom over R5.2 billion in arrears, with another R1.58 billion due by 5 June. The Auditor-General told Parliament this week that Joburg is running on "false assurances" about its own financial health, with R3.69 billion in irregular expenditure recorded in 2024/25 alone. And to top it off, the city just approved a R3.8 billion loan from Germany's KfW development bank, repayable over 15 years at 8.56%, money borrowed to fund infrastructure while the lights are still being threatened.
And on the weekend, five Mozambican nationals were killed in Mossel Bay in what Mozambique's government has formally called xenophobic attacks. Around 55 shacks were torched, some with people still inside. A South African teenager was also killed. The violence erupted over allegations that undocumented migrants were being employed by construction companies. About 800 Mozambicans were caught up in it.
This is the South Africa nobody wants to talk about. I do.
