Grassland fires are becoming a bigger problem nationwide. Research has suggested that in the United States, grassland and shrubland fires are burning more land and destroying more homes than forest fires.

Katharine Suding, a distinguished professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Institute of Arctic and Alphine Research explains how rainy springs can cause more fuel for grassland fires.
