RAGE takes place after the asteroid Apophis devastates Earth, leaving civilization in ruins. Before the impact, governments created massive underground Arks to preserve humanity. Over a century later, one Ark survivor, known only as the Ranger, awakens to a dangerous post-apocalyptic wasteland filled with ruthless bandits, terrifying mutants, and powerful factions fighting for control.
After being rescued by the settlers of Wellspring, the Ranger helps nearby communities survive while uncovering a dark conspiracy. The oppressive Authority, a technologically advanced military regime led by President Cross, seeks to dominate the wasteland by eliminating Ark survivors and crushing all resistance. Working alongside the Resistance, the Ranger completes dangerous missions, secures advanced weapons and vehicles, races across the wasteland, battles mutant hordes, and sabotages the Authority's operations.
As the conflict escalates, the Ranger infiltrates the Authority's heavily fortified Capital Prime facility. In the game's explosive finale, the Ranger activates a global signal that awakens thousands of additional Ark survivors, giving humanity a fighting chance against the Authority's dictatorship. Although President Cross escapes, the Resistance gains new allies, setting the stage for the continuing battle in RAGE 2.
