Pain Management Specialist Spencer Bertram, M.D., D.C., discusses how radiofrequency ablation (RFA) can be used to treat chronic shoulder pain. RFA is a minimally-invasive procedure that utilizes electrical currents to reduce pain. These electrical currents are used to heat up the area of nerve tissue where the pain signal is originated. This heat essentially blocks the signal caused by that nerve tissue, which in turn reduces the pain. For information about MyMichigan’s Spine and Pain Program, visit mymichigan.org/spineandpain.
