A song first found in the second of three editions of the famous song collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The boys magic/wondrous horn) edited by Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim from 1805 to 1808. This large collection of folk songs and poems is a key element of German Romanticism and, as none other than Goethe himself said, had its place in every household. This song here seems to have enjoyed particular popularity in the 1830s and onwards. It shares similarities (most notably the element of the ring) with many other different songs and folk tales, kind of like a potpourri. Its hard to say how old exactly this song is, but perhaps it is indeed a mix of various very old themes from ~1800 - or it could be way older.
Explaining the meaning of the verb grasen in this context is a bit complicated, one might think it means to graze, like cows do on meadows, since that is the most common translation for the word today - but it obviously doesnt make sense here. Instead, grasen belongs to the symbolism of the Graserin, a grass-cutting maiden of low social status. In medieval times already, Graserinnen were often mentioned in rather frivolous songs, as their low social status and them working in a remote place made them vulnerable to men looking for women. Poets quickly became aware of this and used it in playful ways. Today, another meaning of grasen, especially abgrasen, is to search for something far and wide, and this comes closer to what the song means. You just need to combine it with the figure of the grass-cutting maiden. The most famous Graserin song is Ain graserin durch küelen tau (A grass-cutting maiden through cool dew), written by Oswald von Wolkenstein in ~1400. You can clearly notice the frivolous elements there (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-yOY9_a570). They are less prominent in this song, as the combination with more harmless love themes and that of the ring from various tales play a large role, but perhaps the part with the sickle not working means more than at first glance?

Dr. phil. Walter Scherf (1920-2010), known as tejo, was a German composer, researcher in childrens and youth literature, and fairy tale enthusiast. Engaged in the youth movement during his childhood and adolescence, he pursued studies in physics, mineralogy, and musicology at the University of Göttingen from 1946 to 1949. Concurrently, he founded and led youth groups, ultimately becoming the federal leader of the German Youth Association in 1949. Additionally, he contributed as a translator, with his most renowned work being the German translation of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

A true carnival classic written and performed by Jupp Schmitz (1901-1991), a famous folk musician from Cologne, with the help of Hans Jonen. Schmitz and Jonen wrote it in 1953, it became a hit in the carnival regions of Germany - the Rhineland and Cologne in particular - very quickly. The song addresses how the joyful time of carnival, when social norms allow a little more than usual, ends on Ash Wednesday. With its sentimental and simple melody and the message to make use of every opportunity for joy, it was basically perfect for the end of carnival seasons. As such, it remained a classic and well in use even after Schmitz died. Its usually sung by the entire audience (and the performer) while rhythmically swaying. The saying Am Aschermittwoch ist alles vorbei has become a common saying in carnival regions. Schmitz had it engraved on his tombstone.
Schmitz also wrote the famous Wer soll das bezahlen? (Who is supposed to pay for that?) song, a carnival song that also addresses real-life problems of the years right after WW2.
Ash Wednesday marks the end of carnival, while Rosenmontag/Rose Monday (on Shrove Monday, the monday before Ash Wednesday) usually serves as the most umportant day for festivities. There are parades in many of the great carnival hubs then, most famously in the Rhenish cities of Cologne, Aachen, Mainz, Düsseldorf, Bonn ... but also in Franconia and other regions. Some of these value other days more than Rose Monday, though. There are many different local customs and traditions for carnival across Germany.
