Professor Williams has published widely on the subjects of race, gender, law, literature and history. Her first book, THE ALCHEMY OF RACE AND RIGHTS: DIARY OF A LAW PROFESSOR, published by Harvard University Press in 1991, and recognized as one of the 25 best books of that year in the Voice Literary Supplement, remains a classic in the field of Critical Race Theory. Following its publication, she went on to publish her popular column, “Diary of a Mad Law Professor,” which appeared in The Nation magazine for many years. Professor Williams’s other writing includes the books, GIVING A DAMN: RACISM, ROMANCE, AND GONE WITH THE WIND (HarperCollins, 2021), OPEN HOUSE: OF FAMILY, FOOD, PIANO LESSONS, AND THE SEARCH FOR A ROOM OF MY OWN (Farrar, Strauss & Giroux, 2004), SEEING A COLOR-BLIND FUTURE: THE PARADOX OF RACE (Farrar, Strauss & Giroux, 1998), THE ROOSTER’S EGG (Harvard Press, 1995), and many articles in both scholarly journals and the popular press.
