In 2022, UCLA Law Alum Leah Goodridge '09 published the influential article "Professionalism as a Racial Construct" in UCLA Law Review. The article examines how the concept of professionalism does not apply equally to all and, in many ways, is used to subjugate people of color in the workplace.
For this event, Leah talked about the concepts laid out in the article as well as what it means to be a professional in today's workplace. Leah also challenged the notion that being the consummate professional means sticking your head down and not speaking up about workplace and global injustices. For Black History Month, she talked about various Black historical figures who changed history by shaking the table and redefining what it means to be a professional.
