I've been doing some experiments lately to speed up my 5 year old imac. Apart from the ageing hardware few things were holding me back including insufficient storage and poor memory usage.
Using Dr Cleaner, a completely free resource I was able to free up close to 400gb of space on my computer and I can now manage my RAM (memory) better to optimise my mac for the most important tasks I'm doing.
If you have an older computer that needs some love or you just want to keep your current computer in good shape. I highly recommend using Dr Cleaner.
