Here is a run through of my favourite lenses on the canon side and why. This is assuming you are not a full time working professional with access to the trinity (16-35, 24-70, 70-200). Nothing against those lenses but i think this is a more modern set up suited to the young photographer that won't require you to sell your organs to obtain.

Pretty much all of this applies to nikon - the equivalent lenses would be
Nikon 24-70
Sigma 35 Art (nikon mount)
Nikon 16-35
