It's a US$30 barcode scanning wand and it actually works. (It's even got a frickin' laser in it, for Pete's sake. Now you know you want one!)

ebay.com/itm/151578473489

No affiliation, seems to ship to the US only. The book says it'll scan EAN-13, UPC-A, ISSN/ISBN, EAN-8, UPC-E, Code 39, Code 32, Code 93, Code 128, GS1, EAN, UCC128, Codabar, Interleaved 25, Industrial 25, Matrix 25, China Postal, MSI, Code 11 and "et cetera". This uses an installed 3.7 V, 700mAH lithium ion battery that you might even be able to replace yourself.

My other (LED illuminated) keyboard wedge *will* read barcodes off of an LCD panel display. This one doesn't seem as though it can do the same.

There isn't a barcode in the house that is safe...
