The human population and the environment are strictly interdependent. Understanding such interdependence--which is the key determinant of sustainable developments--requires the integration of several methods and scientific disciplines. This session will discuss how basic science can shed light on the determinants of sustainability in systems of human and non-human interacting agents. The colloquium is one of a series of events coordinated by ICTP in honour of the UN's International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.
