How do we understand — and help protect — the Earth's climate system? ICTP's Earth System Physics (ESP) section studies the Earth in a holistic way, modelling the interactions between its different components: global and regional climate, ocean–atmosphere dynamics, atmospheric chemistry and pollution, and the behaviour of the Earth's crust and earthquakes.
ESP is fundamentally a modelling section. Its researchers build the numerical and mathematical models that generate climate change information at local scales — the scales that matter for the communities most at risk. ICTP's international environment has brought ESP into direct contact with the scientific community from developing countries: the countries that will be most affected by environmental and climate change problems.
A key frontier for the section is incorporating human activity into Earth system models — because humans today are an active component of the climate system.
