The Cartoon Cipher 2022-04-30 | A tale of a meme of a movie that’s also a dub of a dub. Pinocchio: A True Story initially went viral due to Pauly Shore’s voice in the trailer but as it turns out, there’s a lot more up with this movie’s voice-acting that just that. Join us as we take our first venture into covering an English dub of Russian-language content. We NEED to Talk About Celebrity Voice Casting

The Cartoon Cipher 2022-02-27 | (Oops, forgot to mention that updates/corrections will be in the Pinned Comment this time).

We’re no TMZ analysts but it’s hard to ignore the presence of live-action celebrities in US animated films. And while they’re popular, a lot of people are understandably getting fed-up with the trend, especially when it looks like they prioritize name power over creating interesting characters through voice acting. But does celebrity voiceover HAVE to be like this? Most famous actors are famous with good reason, right? If celebrities are going to stick around in animation anyway, how would we *want* them to be involved?

This is more of a casual video than normal looking back through our experiences with celebrity voice acting, from our childhood to whatever the heck the Mario movie will be. Apologies that we’re not as specific with the history of things in this video, but we still try looking at things from a few different angles to keep things interesting.

Gintama is a super-popular anime series that both seems very difficult to dub due to very specific humour, and has also had a rather wild history with several different English dubs. Today we take a simplified (though somehow still 30-minute-long) look at each of the dubs and how they approached introducing English voiceover to Gintama. Although we have our criticisms in this video, we absolutely commend all the folks involved in such incredibly tricky projects. We please ask that you have the bare minimum respect regardless of what your opinion is.

Raising $100,000 To Get Back At Crunchyroll

The Cartoon Cipher 2021-07-14 | Today we take a look at the AnimeTube situation as of about July 14th with some insight from folks within the industry. It’s been argued a lot that this was all a scam, and while that can’t be definitively be proved, we can look into how feasible any of their goals were within the current anime streaming environment. That isn’t to say the current streaming environment is perfect and we do not blame anyone for wanting some of the things AnimeTube promised. It isn’t wrong to want things to improve, but to ask for crowdfunding to accomplish a goal that many industry veterans claim isn’t possible, then to avoid or deflect concerns… to quote Nagatoro, is a little sus.

Why do Voice Actors Get Recast?

The Cartoon Cipher 2020-10-04 | SOME CORRECTIONS: It feels like we gave the Evangelion redub a less-than-fair representation. We didn’t want to bloat the video any more than it already is by adding in more audio examples but it should go without saying that many of the early flaws we showed about the ADV dub were fixed in the new dub. There’s a missing line at 16:32. It should’ve been “these newer voices are at least somewhat reminiscent of the old ones but with much stronger direction.” Some people in the comments seem to think we’re criticising the Remake’s recasting but on the contrary we think the new performances are definitely better, but not sure if that’s down to the new actors being better, or the superior voice direction of the Remake. However it’s evident that this point didn’t come through because I forgot to add that line in in the editing process so we apologise for that.

Baccano! is widely regarded in the community as one of the best English dubs of an anime. It takes place in America and features a plethora of Western accents and cultural influence. Today we wanted to reflect on what makes the dub special to so many people, examining everything from its scripting to the performances to the sound design. Will everyone like it? Was there any room for improvement? Was there anything important from the original audio that was left on the cutting room floor? Side note: apologies that this video is edited kind of rough, there’s some accidental repeated shots, a lot of it feels kinda static and the audio isn’t balanced super well. Today’s interview is with Jonah Scott, the English dub voice of Legosi from Beastars, as well as Aiden from the upcoming video game Dying Light 2 among other roles. Jonah is a big fan of this anime himself, being very in-touch with the fandom, doing prep for the role of Legosi… he’s even done a cover of the OP song. But just because this is one of his first leading anime roles, doesn’t mean his talent came from nowhere. In our conversation we go over the acting experience he put into practice when playing this character, as well as the general challenges that come with dubbing a show as unique as Beastars. I had to let him go for another stream near the end but I hope you all enjoy.

We SERIOUSLY loved the Beastars anime adaptation, so we decided to just ramble about it and the dub. Since the Japanese actors had the rare privilege to influence the animation there was always going to be a lot to talk about. While not everything we have to say about this dub is positive, we were genuinely surprised by the level on enthusiasm these actors showed. We wish them and their team all the best for season 2 when that comes around/when Netflix lets them work on it (first thing 2020 amirite).

Was the Digimon Dub Better Than You Remember?

WHY Did FUNimation Drop Interspecies Reviewers?

The Cartoon Cipher 2020-02-06 | UPDATE: episode 4 just arrived on AnimeLab and the visuals are still quite censored. However the subtitle translation seems good! There’s no official translator credit yet, but...if you look around it should be pretty easy to tell. Unfortunately the dub hasn’t continued and in fact AnimeLab has taken down the 1 Dub episode they had twitter.com/cartooncipher/status/1225629656897818625?s=21

Also, as of around episode 5-6 it appears the series is using more and more visual euphemisms to represent the sex rather than flat-out showing it, whether it be panning shots or comedic metaphors. It's not possible to discern as of writing this whether this was simply their plan all along or a direct result of the various cancellations and censorships that occurred. Anime production can take a long time so we'll probably have to wait for official confirmation like an interview to see what their intentions were on this.

Also, we looked into a few titles and realized that around 8 years ago Funimation dubbed Rin Daughters of Mnemosyne, a dark erotica series that does feature on-screen sex which doesn't show genitalia, much like Interspecies Reviewers here. This serves to cast more ambiguity on what Funimation's standards are, or if they've changed over time. We can't claim to know what they are so at best this video should be taken as an educated guess and not fact.

Baccano! is a supernatural gangster series whose English dub is still beloved by many in the anime community to this day about a decade after it was distributed here in the West. The dub was handled by Tyler Walker, a Texas-based actor, writer and ADR director who has been working on anime dubs at FUNimation for almost two decades. Howard Wang is a voice actor in both local animation and anime dubs, an ADR Director, script adaptor, audio engineer, and has recently moved to Los Angeles for a job in game development! As another leading member of SoundCadence Studio I wanted to ask him about what he gets up to behind the scenes on dubs like Kemono Friends, and the upcoming Thermae Romae. Not only that but he’s the adaptive scriptwriter for the dub of one of my personal favourites, Nichijou. A lot of what we do on The Cartoon Cipher simply wouldn’t be possible without the generous assistance of Marissa Lenti. Having worked in almost every position of the anime dubbing pipeline, her perspective on the practice is thoroughly developed. At Otakon this year, the English dub of the hit series Kemono Friends premiered, for which Marissa both wrote the adaptive script and was the voice director. I was able to sit down and chat with her about what it was like dubbing such a special title, among the other dubs announced at Otakon that she’s involved in. We go in-depth regarding her beliefs on localization, the journey of producing the Kemono Friends dub, and what the show personally means to her. Hope you all enjoy!

But is that comparison warranted? Today I sit with Scott Frerichs, otherwise known as Kaiserneko who many might know as a writer, director, editor and actor on one of the most influential anime abridging communities on the internet, DBZA. Should There Be More Dubs Like Ghost Stories?

Likewise, Ghost Stories probably was not "replaced" as we implied in the video, a fanclub in Japan mentioned that it was produced as filler content, so its end was down to the gap no longer needing to be filled.

Also in the time since, I interviewed Steven Foster and read his book The Last Alias. He mentioned he deliberately put the actors in the dub credits, when in actuality he wrote the majority of it himself. As a result our whole tangeant about "bombs" isn't really relevant to the subject.
