A Day in the Life of a K-pop Store Owner: Kloud K-pop Popsori 2024-04-07 | In this new video series called “A Day in the Life of,” we’ll be following people that are related the K-pop industry. While people may associate K-pop idols, producers, and songwriters as people in the industry, there’s a lot of others are tied to K-pop. We wanted to explore those professions instead. We’re planning on following K-pop store owners, DJs, choreographers, and concert venue organizers. Heavily inspired by the popular "A Day in the Life" series of @PaolofromTOKYO , we wanted to put our own spin on it, but for K-pop instead. The Best Way (imo) to Define Both 5th Gen and Future Generations Popsori 2024-02-13 | If you’ve been a K-pop fan for some time, you know how confusing K-pop generations are. When does a gen start? When does it end? At the time of the video, there’s no official way to differentiate the generations.For the longest time, separating gens happened organically, where fans would mutually agree that a new generation began.Yet, when Korean TV station Mnet declared that 5th gen started in mid-2023 with a new group, ZeroBaseOne, many fans were skeptical. They thought that a TV entity shouldn’t have the power to magically decide when a new gen started, especially since the company had major stakes in declaring one.While organically letting K-pop gens from fans isn’t a bad way to decide generations, I think I have the best way of doing so. He would launch a new male group called 2PM. The group blended a mix of Koreans and foreign talent from the US. The tragic story of Fifty Fifty and Keenas redemption arc Popsori 2023-12-16 | “Cupid – Twin version.” You’ve probably heard it before.Whether it was from Tik Tok clips, on YouTube, or from K-pop fans, the song could be considered one of the “K-pop songs of the year in 2023.”Yet, for the artists that sung the viral hit, Fifty Fifty, the “Cupid” craze would soon turn disastrous, as the group was hit with a huge scandal. The rise of NewJeans: How ADOR redefined K-pop marketing Popsori 2023-04-15 | NewJeans debuted in mid-2022 out-of-nowhere. How Chuu fought against abuse from her former label Popsori 2023-02-10 | When Chuu was suddenly kicked out of her group, LOONA, on November 25, 2022, to say this shocked the K-pop world was an understatement. How KAMP LA 2022 quickly became the K-pop Fyre Festival Popsori 2022-11-19 | KAMP LA 2022 came out of nowhere to provide another K-pop festival to US fans. With 15 huge acts coming out to perform in Los Angeles, the festival had a lot of excitement. The K-pop summer wars and the coveted summer queen title Popsori 2021-07-19 | Every summer in K-pop, the summer wars happen. Taking place around late May to the end of August, the summer wars feature female groups and their summer hits. Each group is vying for the right of being that year’s summer queens. While the summer queen title is not an official title that you’ll see at awards shows, to K-pop fans, this unofficial award is a big deal. Being the summer queen has a ton of perks, including advertising, music show appearances, and the spotlight for three months. K-pop labels know all too well about the prestige of this title. Since Sistar’s disbandment in 2017, the summer queen title is open for the taking. While there's been some groups that have summer bangers, none have been consistent enough to be the consensus new, summer queens. Which female group will succeed Sistar’s summer queen throne? The rise of IZ*ONE: How the last Produce group impacted K-pop Popsori 2021-06-12 | The rise of IZ*ONE started two and a half years ago when they debuted. The 12 ladies would shatter records and from 2018 to early 2021 would be the second most popular group after TWICE. The group would shatter records for sales in the first week and have albums and Eps that would go platinum and double platinum.IZ*ONE proved that collaboration between K-pop idols and J-pop AKB48 Group idols could not only work but would be wildly popular. The group would have a huge fanbase, called WIZ*ONEs, in Korea, Japan, and outside of Asia.Unfortunately, the girls would be dragged into the Mnet voting manipulation, as it was shown the show’s producers rigged the show. This included IZ*ONE’s final lineup. Despite this controversy in the background, IZ*ONE not only succeeded but thrived.When it was announced the group would disband after their two-and-a-half-year contract, fans raised about $3 million USD to save them. More radical fans tried to demand that the group to stay together at the CJ E&M offices. However, the group would follow through and disband in April 2021.When IZ*ONE disbanded, it marked the end of the Produce era. Created from the incredibly popular music reality show, Produce 48, the group was instantly popular from their debut.But rather than dwell on the negative news surrounding the group, let’s break down how the last Produce group became a huge hit in Korea. The Rise of Heartsdales: From New York to Tokyo Popsori 2021-02-02 | When sisters Sugiyama Emi and Yumi moved from Japan to New York at a young age, they never imagined they’d be singers one day.From 1981 to 1995, they would grow up in a small area in New York called Heartsdale, located in the Yonkers suburb. In 1995, they would move back to Japan where the sisters would go to school. During that time, Emi and Yumi wanted to share their passion for American urban, hip-hop, and R&B with Japanese audiences.They would get their chance in 2001 on the popular TV show Asayan. After winning the competition, the girls would adopt the name Heartsdales, where they grew up. They would go under the stage names Jewels (Emi) and Rum (Yumi).For five years, they would have a solid career, working with the likes of m-flo, Double, and Hinouchi Emi. They had some serious bangers and looked posed to take over the Japanese urban and hip-hop scene.Until 2006…That year, the sisters would call it quits and go their own ways after Heartsdales. After their singing career, the two have lived relatively quiet lives.While they had a short career, they made an impact on the scene in the early to mid 2000s. From 2014 until their departure from JYP in January 19th, 2021, GOT7 would be one of the groups that launched JYP Entertainment to new heights.Yet, when the late 2010s rolled around, JYP would create a slew of new groups. 2020 MAMAs: The State of K-pop in 2020 Popsori 2020-12-24 | The 2020 MAMAs, or Mnet Asian Music Awards, is one of the largest music shows in Asia. Created by Mnet, they plan to make it into the Asian Grammy Awards, where they invite the biggest stars.From seeing BTS and Twice to IU and Seventeen, the six hour show showed the best of K-pop.While the show is entertaining and polished, the MAMAs had some mishaps. The show was mired in controversy with idols freezing outside and didn’t really show any artists other than K-pop idols. The show felt like the Mnet K-pop Music Awards.But the MAMAs does set the standard for K-pop award shows. Can SM’s new virtual girl group Aespa be a big hit? Popsori 2020-11-12 | SM is back with a new female group called Aespa. But this is not your normal K-pop group, as the group will be half human, half virtual idols. A YG fans dream: Visiting a YG store in Korea Popsori 2020-10-19 | Note: Apologies for the low volume during the live speaking parts, as I forgot to bring my Rode mic in Insadong. Visiting YG Place wasn't in my plans that day, so when I stumbled upon the store, I shot video with what I had. Why Tao, Kris, and Luhan left EXO during their peak Popsori 2020-09-05 | The dominant EXO era started at the peak of their popularity in early 2014. EXO would dominate award shows, amass millions of fans, and win the 2013 Song of the Year Award in “Growl.” The only thing that could have slowed down the EXO train was themselves.And that’s exactly what happened.When Kris, Luhan, and Tao left the group in 2014 and 2015, their departures would mark one of the biggest moments in K-pop history. Real Talk: Why I love smart K-pop fans but hate Koreaboos Popsori 2020-06-25 | In the second episode of the unscripted, often times spicy Real Talk, I go off on “Why I love Smart K-pop Fans, but Hate Koreaboos.” It’s a topic that’s been on my mind for quite some time.I’m fortunate to talk and meet a lot of smart, intelligent K-pop fans that want to learn not just about K-pop and K-dramas, but about Korea and its culture. These people are awesome. But on the other end, I meet a lot of Koreaboos, who sadly, think they’re Korean, obsessed about K-pop and K-dramas, are usually very boastful about their Korean knowledge, yet overrates said knowledge about the country, aka ignorance.I offer my take on why Koreaboos are unhealthy for the K-pop scene and how to change. Koreaboos aren't bad people, just very passionate fans that are a bit misguided about Korea. How Koreas pop culture scene is adapting to the world lockdown Popsori 2020-05-11 | With the world lockdown affecting everyone’s lives in 2020, the pop culture and entertainment scenes have also been hit hard, including the Korean scene. While live concerts have been cancelled, due to COVID-19, many labels have resorted to other means to provide entertainment.Since people are staying home and avoid going outside, understandably, many are looking for entertainment during their extended home stay. K-pop companies, independent artists, the movie industry, and K-drama labels are now turning to virtual concerts, streamed fan meets, and online events. While going to live concerts may be the preferred way for fans to see their favorite singers, going online may actually be a very good and profitable alternative to live concerts for the big groups. Small-to-mid sized groups, not so much.Regardless, there is still a lot of opportunity in a now 100% virtual, streaming era for entertainment. JYPs upcoming new J-pop show: Nizi Project Popsori 2020-03-18 | JYP is looking to expand his music empire in 2020, but not in K-pop. Rather, the K-pop mogul is heading to Japan, where he and Sony Music Japan have teamed up to produce a new, upcoming J-pop audition show called Nizi Project.Planned since late 2019, the show has now released their first episodes online.Auditioning new hopefuls all over Japan, Hawaii, and Los Angeles, JYP is building his new J-pop group through the show. The auditions are going on now as the first show on JYP Entertainment’s YouTube channel and Hulu Japan. The rise of After School: K-pops sensational rookie group of 2009 Popsori 2020-03-04 | After School was one of the most iconic groups in K-pop, debuting in 2009. They had two huge hits in “Because of You” and “Bang!” in 2009 and 2010 respectively, winning many “Rookie of the Month” awards during 2009.The group would also create the subunit Orange Caramel, which would be popular and one of the unique groups in the 2010s. How Parasite became the new gateway to Korean film Popsori 2020-01-13 | Parasite was one of the biggest hits not only in Korean cinema, but among world movies in 2019. The movie first made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and after the showing, word soon went viral how good this movie is. Director Bong Joon-ho’s film would soon take the world by storm.The movie’s tales soon reached US shores, where the movie quickly resonated with Western movie-goers.
