Since the early 1990s, MOSFET circuits have remained one of the pedal industry’s most elusive white whales — not because the circuits are difficult to source or produce, but because it’s a difficult distortion to execute well. If that weren’t a daunting enough challenge, the desire to innovate or evolve the MOSFET-fueled design — while retaining the distinctive grit that’s made a particular ’90s pedal such a desired addition to guitarists’ pedalboards — has proven to be a near-insurmountable hurdle. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Wampler took up the mantle of this seemingly Sisyphean task, meticulously studying the decades of MOS-style distortions and permutations to capture that MOSFET magic. After multiple bouts of painstaking R&D, Wampler has emerged with the Mofetta, a US-built overdrive pedal that brings the time-tested tones of the lauded early-’90s device that inspired it well into the 21st century, including the classic 3-band EQ, and augmenting it with a texture switch to expand its sonic terrain even further. Sweetwater’s Oak Ridge rex, Don Carr, deploys the Mofetta through a kaleidoscopic array of guitar and amp pairings to take this Wampler wonder to its limits. Check it out!

Richard Nicol cofounded Pittsburgh Modular with fellow aural engineer Michael Johnsen back in 2012, sharing a vision that the so-called golden age of analog synthesis was only the beginning of a sonic odyssey yet to be fulfilled. In the ensuing 10-plus years, Richard and his team have embarked on a quest to push the outer boundaries of analog sound, unconvinced that the best it had to offer came and went in the 1970s. Instruments like the Taiga, and the East Beast and West Pest of sister operation Cre8audio, demonstrate Richard’s ethos of innovation, and the Voltage Lab 2 distills over a decade of unwavering commitment into a single multidimensional synth. With over 100 patch points, unfathomable versatility, and a slew of never-before-heard wave-crafting technologies, it is truly a bona fide laboratory. As both a solo artist and lead to the math-rock outfit Covet, Yvette Young has 15 official releases under her belt that demonstrate the virtuosic chops and innovative playing that led to her well-earned signature Ibanez guitar. In no uncertain terms, Pantera will be forever regarded as one of metal’s most electrifying seminal forces, innovating and remapping the genre with an unrivaled blend of style, substance, sound, and power (that some may even describe as vulgar). Cowboys from Hell emblazoned the band onto the tapestry of pivotal metal moments, leading to a five-album run over the next decade that influenced countless artists and engineers. Recently, 2022 saw bassist Rex Brown and vocalist Philip Anselmo unite with close friends and longtime collaborators Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante to do right by the dearly missed Abbott brothers and bring Pantera’s unrelenting sonic forces to the masses to be enjoyed as all metal ought to be: live. Sweetwater’s metal maestro, Nick Bowcott, catches up with bass tech Bobby Landgraf and Pantera bassist, Rex Brown — the man the late, great Dimebag referred to as “the pit boss.” Nick and Rex talk all things tour rigs, Rex’s basses, the Abbott brothers, hocky tape, “Floods,” angels, timeless memories, and much, much more.

Once Philip Anselmo joined Pantera, history was forever changed by the band’s spirit of punishing riffs, searing solos, and unrelenting sonic haymakers, with 1990’s Cowboys from Hell cementing their legacy as one of metal’s most galvanizing innovators. In 2022, Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown decided to honor the late Abbott brothers, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, by bringing Pantera back to the masses with a world tour. Longtime friends and collaborators Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante are filling in on guitar and drum duties, respectively, giving seasoned fans an exhilarating run of performances while picking up newcomers along the way. Sweetwater’s Nick Bowcott caught up with Zakk Wylde to talk all things gear, touring, and what it means to take up the gauntlet of his dear, much-missed friend, the legendary Dimebag Darrell.
