Most shooters use drills to confirm what they can do. I use drills to reveal what I can’t do.
In this clip, we’re shooting doubles at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 yards during an AHT Baseline Carbine course with law enforcement officers in Bangor, Maine.
The goal isn’t just to shoot all A-zones and pat ourselves on the back. If we’re shooting all A-zones at 40 yards, then we need to shoot faster and/or move farther back until problems become evident.
The goal of proper training is to find where we have a tendency to do the wrong thing. Are we watching the dot instead of remaining target-focused? Are we introducing unnecessary input or tension into the gun as we’re shooting? Are we steering shots outside the A-zone and if so, why? What’s the root cause?
Once the pace and distance stop exposing our deficiencies, it’s time to increase the demand. For me, training isn’t about proving capability, it’s more-so about revealing limitations. Diagnosing cause and working on the remedy.
Constant improvement and refinement.
