This precious teenaged puppy screamed in pain when his rescuers tried to lift him. His feet had been run over by a vehicle, and one paw was crushed and degloved. His toes were splayed and swollen to twice their normal size. Standing was too excruciating to bear. Had he been an older dog with more brittle bones, he might have been facing an amputation, but this young boy still had soft bones.

We treated his wound and wrapped his intensely painful feet in thick bandages which we changed every day. The little guy was one of the most careful young patients we've ever had. He seemed determined to cause no fuss. But he was so inward we wondered if he was depressed. Then, when he'd progressed a bit on his healing journey, well, this boy burst out in song. His mother literally gave the sweetest kiss as if to say “thank you” to our rescuer as he gently lifted her baby. Once on the treatment table the darling puppy was deeply confused and exhausted, but it only took a few days for him to feel so much better that he became a persuasive little play organiser with his new friend. Weve called him Alvin, and he is a tribute to the fact that every life, however new, has astounding meaning, and the meaning is love. The world needs more sweetness. And with so much tissue exposed, we knew a conventional bandage might not be enough to save her. Once she was on our treatment table and we could examine both her enormous wound and the excruciatingly painful leg fracture, we were relieved that she had enough skin remaining to close the wound with sutures. We prepped her for surgery and our surgeon carefully closed the entire wound on her torso. He was also able to close the open fracture wound before plastering her leg. This ordeal was enough to break anyones spirit, but not Mollys. She was gentle, kind and loving. Every moment. From the first seconds of her rescue, to the kisses she gave once she was healed. How much lovelier the world is with Molly in it.$

$Buffalo with horrific injuries and not able to stand, safe in permanent sanctuary. Collapsed and faint with pain, a huge female water buffalo lay dying in the rubble on the side of a road after an accident left her with a terrible leg fracture and horrific wound. Almost lifelessly inert, our rescue team, even with the help of several passers-by, had no way to lift her so we had to call for a crane to lift her to our ambulance and to safety. Her pain was unimaginable, but this enormous buffalo was too hurt to resist, and we rushed her back to our hospital, where we immediately began to do whatever we could to save such a sweet soul. We called her Amelia because the name sounded delicate and feminine exactly what we saw in this giant beauty. For weeks she couldnt stand on her own. Teams of sometimes ten volunteers and staff routinely stood together for the challenge of lifting her to her feet so that her blood circulation stayed healthy and her other limbs could bear weight. Slowly, slowly, the wound itself healed, but the fracture could never knit together properly and, permanently disabled, frustration showed in her eyes. But after a few months, something changed for Amelia. It wasnt just her improved mobility. It was something much bigger: Betty. With gorgeous buffalo Betty by her side, there is nothing Amelia cant do, though she does it all a little slowly.
