It was John Rosengrant and Shane Mahan, both big fans of Anne Rice's hugely popular novel, Interview with the Vampire, who initially brought Neil Jordan's plan for a film adaptation to Stan Winston's attention.
“When John and Shane came to me and said they heard that Neil Jordan was going to do Interview with the Vampire, I was interested," said Stan Winston. "I was a big fan of Neil Jordan as a director. So, I called him. He was shocked to hear from me because, to his mind, I was the ‘dinosaur guy.’ He would never have thought of this studio for the makeup effects for Interview with the Vampire. I literally had to sell this studio and myself to him."
The creative forces required to make the film a reality finally came together when Neil Jordan brought on Digital Domain to execute visual effects shots and Stan Winston Studio to create vampire makeup and effects.
In this 1994 behind-the-scenes VHS footage from the Stan Winston Studio archives, Shane Mahan, with the help of Lindsay MacGowan, shows and explains the planned pulsating neck effect for Yvette's character (played by Thandiwe Newton) in Interview With the Vampire (1994). He shares the techniques used to create pulsating veins on a living character, so you can also sink your teeth into your very own bladder #fx projects!
