Alien Nation is set in 1991, a few years after an off-course alien spaceship has landed on Earth, depositing 300,000 bulbous-headed aliens, called ‘newcomers’, a specially-bred slave race that attempts to integrate into human society. More than a science fiction movie, the film was a metaphor for race relations and a plea for tolerance.

After working with Gale Anne Hurd on The Terminator and Aliens, Stan Winston Studio was the clear choice for alien designs in the 1988 film Alien Nation, directed by Graham Baker.

Due to the volume of prosthetic makeups (hundreds of makeup appliances!) that would have to be applied on the set, Stan Winston brought in Oscar-winning makeup artist Zoltan Elek to lead the daily application.

This short shows behind-the-scenes videos of newcomer Joshua Strader's prosthetic makeup application by Zoltan Elek and testing by actor Jeff Kober.
