From the 1870s to the 1960s, Pullman Porters were the face of rail travel. They handled everything from luggage, communication, to passenger care all while navigating the realities of racism and limited opportunity. What they built from that reality changed the trajectory of Black labor in America.
In 1925, they organized. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters became the first successful African American labor union, securing better wages, benefits, and dignity—and helping push the broader fight for civil rights forward.
This is more than history. It’s a story of strategy, resilience, and impact.
