Step back into a forgotten chapter of Texas history with historian and author James Bernsen as he explores the events surrounding the often-overlooked Texas Revolution of 1811. In this recorded presentation at the Allen Heritage Village, Bernsen discusses the research behind his award-winning book, The Lost War for Texas: Mexican Rebels, American Burrites, and the Texas Revolution of 1811.
Long before the famous battles of 1835 and 1836, revolutionaries in Texas and Mexico were already fighting for independence from the Spanish Empire. Bernsen examines how these conflicts reshaped the future of the Southwest and connected Mexican rebels, American adventurers, and supporters of Aaron Burr in ways rarely discussed in traditional Texas history.
The program covers the major phases of the conflict, including the Casas and Zambrano revolts, the Gutiérrez-Magee Expedition, and the devastating Battle of Medina — one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on Texas soil.
Drawing from his background as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer and historical researcher, Bernsen shares the discoveries that led him to uncover new links between early Texas revolutionaries and broader political movements of the era.
James Bernsen is a recipient of the 2025 Literary Award from the Texas Institute of Letters and has published work in the Handbook of Texas, Southwestern Historical Quarterly, Texas Books in Review, and East Texas Historical Journal.
