WHAT IS A PULLED HAMSTRING?
A pulled hamstring is a strain of one or more of the three muscles along the back of your thigh, and it happens when those fibers are stretched or loaded beyond what they can handle. Hamstring strains range from mild (minor micro-tears) to severe (complete rupture), but the vast majority are mild to moderate and respond very well to the right exercises. The most important thing to understand is that a hamstring strain is a muscle injury, and muscle injuries heal best with controlled progressive movement, not passive rest.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I PULLED A HAMSTRING?
The most common signs of a pulled hamstring are a sudden sharp pain or tightness in the back of your thigh during activity, followed by soreness, stiffness, and sometimes bruising or swelling in the days after. You will likely feel it most when bending forward, straightening your knee, or climbing stairs, and in more significant strains you might notice weakness or a pulling sensation when walking. If your pain came on suddenly during activity and is located along the back of your thigh, there is a good chance you are dealing with a hamstring strain.

WHAT ARE THE BEST EXERCISES FOR A PULLED HAMSTRING?
The best exercises for a pulled hamstring follow a progressive sequence that starts with gentle range-of-motion movements and builds toward functional strengthening exercises like the Romanian deadlift and single leg RDL. This approach stimulates the muscle fibers to heal, restores full flexibility, and rebuilds the strength needed to prevent re-injury. If you have been resting and icing and waiting for things to get better with little progress, you are in the right place, and these exercises are going to help tremendously.
