Bunny chats to Jon Carter of the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) and Jon recommends good bird apps to help identify birds, and Bunny points out that sound engineers often recommend attracting birds to the garden as bird song can be the best foil to less desirable intrusive noise in the garden.
The bird feed industry in the UK is over £350 million a year, and we put out enough foods for half of the whole bird population. Jon explains which birds need what foods and how we can help them with what we grow in the garden.
Many Red Kites live around Bunny’s garden, their common name being ‘The Bin Men of the Skies’ as their main food is dead mammals.
Adding lots of meadow plants helps the swifts and swallows amongst others as it attracts insects which they feed on. Lots of owls live around the garden as the old meadow is a great habit for mice loved by owls.
The increase in birds feeding from the lawn that is now maintained by a robotic mower is likely due to the top layer of extremely fine cuttings that is continually being broken down by worms, beetles and the like.
