Following on from our recent summer gardening videos, we've loved reading all your comments. One in particular from Cotswold Blonde caught Bunny's attention. She asked about the challenge of keeping a newly planted garden alive during the drought and hosepipe restrictions in the Cotswoldsâa question many gardeners are facing right now.
Bunny explains that a hosepipe ban doesn't mean you have to stop planting. There are still perfectly acceptable ways to establish new plants, including using watering cans, automatic irrigation systems already in place, and even old wells where available.
She then demonstrates her tried-and-tested planting method. It takes a little longer, but it gives every plant the best possible start and dramatically improves its chances of surviving hot, dry conditions.
đ± Bunny's 6-Step Planting MethodSoak the plant in water until all the air bubbles stop rising.Dig a hole large enough for the root ball.Fill the planting hole completely with water.Once the water has drained away, spade round or cut the edge of the root ball if necessary to encourage fine roots to grow, then place the plant in the hole.Backfill with soil and firm it gently by hand, water plant
Add mulch after watering.
After planting a beautiful Begonia grandis alba, Bunny takes us into her developing Mediterranean-style gravel garden in the inner courtyard, where drought-tolerant planting is key. Along the way she introduces some of her favourite plants, including Geranium maderense, Galactites tomentosus, Euphorbia myrsinites (despite the impressive rash it gives her!), Agapanthus, and Stipa.
