๐ช๐บ โ๏ธ Originally from South America, apple snails of the genus Pomacea have become invasive in many parts of the world.
Since November 2012, they are restricted across the EU, and since 2019 classified as quarantine pests โ meaning import, sale, breeding, and distribution are banned.
โ ๏ธ Why?
They reproduce rapidly and can destroy aquatic plants, wetlands, and even rice fieldsโcausing serious ecological and agricultural damage.
๐ For aquarists:
- Rules apply to private hobbyists as well
- No selling, gifting, or breeding
- Existing animals may only be kept under strict control
Similar species (e.g. Asolene spixi) are still allowed
