Claire's experience with Portugal's public healthcare system has been hit and miss. But when it's good, it's because of the people.

She had a difficult birth in the public system. A few nurses were phenomenal. Her health center nurse in Porto did home visits she didn't have to do. This morning when Claire needed three hours of glucose testing, the staff moved her from the waiting room into an unused consultation room so she could work on her laptop at a proper desk.

The system has gaps. But the compassion makes up for a lot.
