š ALGARVE DROUGHT! Where would we be without Benafimās aquifer?
In this episode of Algarve Unlocked, I head into the hills of central Algarve to discover the tiny village of Benafim ā a place of just 435 residents sitting directly above one of the Algarveās most important water sources: the QuerenƧaāSilves Aquifer.
š§ They say Benafim was built here for one reason: water. Yet when you arrive, thereās no river, no lake, not even a trickle in sight. So how did locals survive in a region plagued by drought? The answer lies beneath your feet. From ancient noras (donkey-driven waterwheels) to stone cisterns, fountains, and rainwater channels, Benafimās story is all about ingenuity, survival, and respect for natureās most precious resource.
š Getting here: Benafim sits on the N124 road, between Alte, Salir, and Messines, about 20 minutes north of LoulĆ© and 30 minutes from the Algarveās beaches. It feels remote, but itās well connected by road, bus routes, and surrounded by incredible scenery including the Rocha da Pena.
