BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Bedford County say an arrest warrant has been issued for an Indianapolis man who is accused of posing as a local contractor and defrauding the Bedford High School of over $1.6 million.
Investigators say the alleged theft was discovered after the Altoona-based company that was hired to conduct renovations at the high school claimed that they had not yet been paid.
According to the criminal affidavit, police say a check that the school allegedly sent to the contractor was illegally cashed by 70-year-old Terry Reckert, of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Investigators say bank records later revealed that Reckert had allegedly opened a business account in Evansville, Indiana while posing as an employee of the company that was hired for the work.
Police say Reckert is also accused of forging multiple documents, including a fraudulent W9 form, claiming ownership of the contracting company.
While the Bedford Area School District was unable to comment on the active investigation, district officials did confirm that the money has already been reimbursed and explained that the stolen funds were from a loan that the school had applied for to complete the renovations.
According to online court records, Reckert is facing over a dozen charges, headlined by felonies for theft by unlawful taking, forgery and tampering with records.
