Machine Head, developed by Core Design and published by Eidos in 1996. Also known as Blam! Machinehead in EU regions.

"THE WORLD IS INFECTED WITH A DEADLY, MAN-MADE VIRUS. GUESS WHO'S THE CURE?

In the near future, an experiment in Nano technology has gone horribly wrong and a bio-engineered virus threatens to take over the world! You are selected to pilot through 15 levels of twisted, putrefied mutants in an effort to cleanse the planet of the rapidly reproducing virus. Oh, and by the way, you have a bomb strapped to your body that has a short fuse. It's a desperate race against time as you deploy flame throwers, disruptors and homing missiles to wipe out the virus before the world is mutated forever.

Features:
* Fully SGI rendered 3-D virtual landscapes with 360 degree mapping terrain!
* Take on warped armies of dog-bats, giant spiders, grinning zombie clowns and dozens of terrifying mutations!
* 15 adrenaline-pumping missions!
* Gear up with chain guns, photons, io-storms and enough firepower to toast the mutant horde!
* Race the clock-you're strapped to a bomb that's ready to give you a one-way ticket to Kingdom Come!"

So, you have been strapped into a hover bike loaded with weapons and sent into the world to clear it of deadly virus lead by a mad scientist high as a kite. Your hover bike is loaded with weapons to take down all enemies with plenty of ammo spread around the early levels with plenty of room for exploration. Energy is super important and dropped by many of the enemies. You get only one life so you need to keep the energy up as it also doubles as a timer that starts counting down if taking to much damage and your vehicles explodes in a spectacular blast. There are a few ways to die in the game mainly from being blown up as well as drowning (you cant float on water) and falling off cliffs which is made super annoying by the controls. There are consoles to find which open up new areas but first you need to find the keys. There are door unlock keys and reality changing console keys.

The game is played on hard mode to the detriment of the game as it just makes all the enemies bullet sponges which can be a real problem later in the game as ammo is more limited. It took me to long to realise that you are better off ignoring most enemies saving the ammo for the annoying ones like turrets and rocket launchers. There is no scoring in the game so no benefit to blasting everything. The IO Storm is a visually pleasing weapon destroying anything it's shot at but you can only hold one. The disrupter bombs are good but you can only hold 3. The photon beams and grenades are great but ammo can be limited. homing missiles do a lot of damage and not to rare to find ammo. Fire and normal missiles are mostly useless.

Overall, I cant say i find this a fun or enjoyable game. The maze like levels that have you backtracking to unlock paths to more of the maze and the controls, omg the controls! Trying to move forward and back whilst strafing and firing the primary and secondary weapons and moving the camera is a test of dexterity in it self and will ruin your hands. The lack of scoring curbs any enthusiasm for doing well in a level and you just want to get to the end as quick as possible and move on to another game. Not one of Core Designs games but at least they tried something different. It is kind of similar to Tunnel B1, but that game is more refined and controls better.
