In 1999, the East Village was dark and low, down and out. There weren't any shiny condos or Whole Foods like today. The only players around were sketchy delis, tiny hole-in-the-walls serving gyros and Mars Bar—a watering hole that scared the shit out of most people. On the walls were tons of graffiti and on the streets, barking Rottweilers. And on the rooftops, crowing roosters waiting to be used in Santeria ceremonies. Gabrielle Hamilton didn't know anything about opening a restaurant, let alone opening one in such a neighborhood. But as soon as the butcher paper went up on her windows of soon-to-be Prune restaurant, the neighbors came knocking and they had a lot to say and still do to this day. Our new Mind of a Chef digital series, Let's Meet Your Neighbor, brings to life the stories of the colorful characters that come out of the woodworks when you open a restaurant. First up is Annie.
