Protesters assembled at the Department Of Justice this week to speak out about their being unwilling to arrrest the bankers engaged in illegal practices such as robo-signing and price fixing. However, only injustice has been served, as those protesting the lack of prosecution have now been arrested, while those who swindled billions from the aAmerican people are still free.[1]
Last March, according to the Wall Street Journal, "US and state officials accused five large US banks of overcharging and misleading borrowers in court documents filed Monday as part of the $25 billion settlement of alleged foreclosure abuses."
The Journal's article also stated that, "Banks 'engaged in a pattern of unfair and deceptive practices' and made 'false or fraudulent' claims to the federal government, according to an eight-count complaint filed in U.S. district court for the District of Columbia. The filing offered a detailed description of how the five banks allegedly violated state and federal law. Officials spent more than a year investigating foreclosure practices that began as a probe of 'robo-signing,' or employees approving documents without proper review."[2]
The action was prompted by Attorney General Eric Holder's remarks to the Senate Judiciary Committee in March that he did not intend to prosecute any of the Wall Street banks because it could have "a negative impact on the national economy, perhaps even the world economy."[3]
Meanwhile, the US District Court in California has tried and prosecuted a man found guilty of price fixing in that industry.[4] And as well, state prosecutors have sentenced a woman working for a document processing firm that was found guilty of the same robo-signing of mortgages that the Wall Street banks engaged in.[5]
It would seem to me that it is a far greater risk of negative impacts on both domestic and world financial markets to demonstrate to thieves and racketeers that they will not be prosecuted, as that is what caused the collapse in the first place. How could the attorney general of the US even make such a ludicrous statement?
Because DHS agents were there to silence, by force, the peaceful protesters that would speak the truth about the fact that if you let criminals go unprosecuted, that they will be free to commit more crimes.
The protester pictured, Carmen Pittman, had just been recovered from the ground where she was laying after being tasered, though she offered no discernible means of resistance to arrest.
She only became involved in activism after her family home was threatened with foreclosure in 2011 by JP Morgan, in what Occupy Our Homes called "one of the most predatory loans we have ever seen."[6]
