The most important step to take in making a building energy efficient, is to make it air tight. Thanks to Protecto Wall VP, we can make the cabin air tight in an easy step at the same time as installing the WRB (weather resistive barrier).

Protecto Wrap is a US based company that makes products for residential and commercial projects. The products help air seal and keep the structure dry. We had the pleasure of Clayton and Brian coming out to the off grid cabin. Clayton and Brian were great to help explain the benefits, and installation, of several products. More details on other flashing products will come in future videos.

This video primarily focusses on the new product called "Protecto Wall VP". This is a peal and stick membrane that serves duel functions. It is the weather resistive layer. This means it keep the water out of the structure during construction, and will continue stopping liquid water that finds its way past the cladding layer for the life of the structure. All siding and windows will eventually leak, so this is the secondary layer.

The Protecto Wall VP also serves as a fantastic air barrier. Stopping air leakage is extremely important to saving energy, and protecting the structure from water vapor entering and potentially condensing inside the wall structure. Every gap and hole is covered by this membrane making a wonderful air control layer when applied over the sheathing.

Even though Protecto Wall VP stops liquid water, it is still vapor open. It allows water vapor to pass through with a vapor permeance of 43.5.

Protecto Wall VP comes in two sizes, a 40 inch wide roll, and a 12 inch wide roll.
