The Mississippi River basin is vast, including more than 40% of the U.S. It is an interconnected system of more than 7,000 rivers and streams all flowing into the Mississippi River. Stretching from Montana to Pennsylvania, Minnesota to the Gulf, this system provides drinking water, nourishes crops and offers critical wildlife habitat. The basin includes mountain streams, grassland prairies, farmland and swampland. Yet the Mississippi has been dramatically reshaped over time. The Nature Conservancy partners across sectors and state lines to improve water quality, restore habitat and strengthen climate resilience. The work adds up across landscapes to create a healthier river and a more sustainable future.
