Alabama’s Lower Perdido Islands Restoration project took hard work, collaboration and a whole lot of sand—216,000 cubic yards to be exact. Daniel Lantrip helped lead the charge, working with TNC and partners to restore 26 acres of marsh and dune habitat and plant over 200,000 native seagrass plants across the small islands. But none of this would have been possible without federal funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other federal conservation policies. These islands now provide stronger protection from storms, a safer home for wildlife and an economic boost for the region.
