What are the PROS AND CONS OF DNA testing kits bought from the likes of Ancestry and MyHeritage and are DNA tests accurate for ancestry, or is it not worth researching your family tree in this way? In this video from History Calling I consider the advantages and disadvantages of these kits and ask, are DNA tests worth it?
As well as looking at how reliable DNA results are from these kits, I’ll discuss how expensive DNA tests are, how quickly you get your DNA results, how safe DNA tests are and how easy DNA tests are to use. I’ll also think about what DNA tests tell you about your family history and what might happen to your genetic data once the company you’ve used has it. I’ll consider too the emotional ramifications of taking these tests, from finding long lost relatives and filling in gaps in a person’s family tree, such as an unknown parent or grandparent, to discovering family secrets such as affairs and adoption. There are even people whose DNA journey has led them to discover appalling crimes committed by family members and fertility clinics, while others have been able to use their results to claim citizenship of a country they didn’t previously know their family hailed from.
