In this video, I demonstrate how monsters can be used as a Random Number/Random Output Generator. Monsters will spawn on the pads and fall into the holding chambers with the pressure plates.

The pressure plates will close off all other holding chambers so only one intended output is given. Unfortunately, more than one holding chamber can be filled at the same time, flawing the system. However, if the holding chambers are always open, the machine turns into a random sequence generator (until all are filled).

Furthermore, the output remains until the mob despawns. Dispensers can be hooked up to kill the mob as soon as they enter the chamber.

If this design were to use a monster spawner and a smaller room, then this would be far more compact. It could very well be used in adventure maps for some form of output, although the cactus output generator works just as well.
