Before Beg to Differ made Prong a much bigger name in the metal world, the band had already built a unique identity in the underground of New York City.
In this first episode of my Prong history series, we go all the way back to 1986, when Tommy Victor and Mike Kirkland formed the band while working at the legendary CBGB. We look at how their connection to the New York hardcore scene helped shape Prong's early sound and how the band developed their own filthy, aggressive style that became known as "sewercore."
We'll also cover Prong's early recordings, including the 1986 demo and their 1987 mini-album Primitive Origins, before moving into their landmark underground debut, Force Fed.
Finally, we'll look at Howie Abrams and the important role he played in bringing Prong's music to a wider American audience through In-Effect Records, helping set the stage for the band's eventual signing with Epic Records.
This is the story of Prong before Beg to Differ when they were still an uncompromising underground band emerging from the gritty New York City hardcore scene.
And this is only the beginning.
Next episode: Prong signs with a major label and releases Beg to Differ the album that introduced me to the band when I was a teenager.
