A Critical Dragon | Prologue Analysis: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin with Jimmy Nutts of the Fantasy Nuttwork @ACriticalDragon | Uploaded November 2022 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
In a bit of a switch up of the normal format, I am joined here by Jimmy Nutts of @thefantasynuttwork to have a look at the prologue of one of his favourite novels, A Game of Thrones (Book One of A Song of Ice and Fire) by George R.R. Martin.
We took the opportunity to have a chat about the techniques that GRRM uses to convey tone, atmosphere, character, scene and setting. We are only looking at the first page and half of the prologue, so no spoilers for the book or series.
Whether you are a reader or a writer (or both) it is always interesting to have a look at how authors convey the story, and use language to draw readers into their narrative... often without us knowing how they did it.
