Cheers to Wozzie – nature’s own Wolbachia bacteria, for helping to fight dengue!
#Did you know? Wolbachia is a safe and naturally occurring bacteria found in more than 60% of insect species, but not in Ades aegypti mosquitoes. This bacteria is extracted from another mosquito species (Aedes albopictus) and introduced into Aedes aegypti eggs. These eggs then emerge as Wolbachia-Aedes mosquitoes and are bred in NEA’s facility for release. Wozzie Mozzies are not genetically modified, as no changes have been made to their genetic material! Most of them die within a week of release, after mating with female mosquitoes.
