The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory is advancing how researchers study life at its most fundamental levels. By combining expertise in biology, chemistry, and computing, Argonne scientists are exploring how living systems behave in extreme environments.

Some of the most intriguing questions in biology center on the limits of life itself. Microbes have been found in environments once thought uninhabitable, from deep underground to highly radioactive or chemically extreme conditions. Understanding how these organisms survive and what processes allow them to function remains a major scientific challenge.

At Argonne, researchers are using artificial intelligence and large language models to accelerate this discovery process. In this video, Argonne Microelectronics Institute director Angel Yanguas-Gil explains how these tools help scientists analyze complex biological and chemical data, uncover patterns, and explore how extremophiles operate at a fundamental level. This approach opens new pathways for understanding how life adapts—and how those mechanisms might be applied to energy systems and advanced technologies.
