Been doing some optimisation on the engine - and have added a frame counter. Now sits at a steady 3 frames (so about 17fps) which isn't bad.
Still plenty of room for optimisation I'd guess, especially for someone who knows Z80 better than I do.

Recorded directly off the ZX Spectrum Next hardware.
