A preview to "From Evergreen Plantation to the Korean War and Back". In this installment of oral histories for NCPTT's Documentation of Slave Cabin and Tenant Farming Houses Project, we visited Evergreen Plantation in Edgard, Louisiana where we walked the grounds with Lester Simon. Reminiscing of his time living at Evergreen as well as visiting relatives was a special moment as we reached the double row of cabins, old and large oak trees creating a canopy above. Simon points out the location of historic buildings that are no longer standing, such as the ground's school and the previously unknown whereabouts of the plantation's church. He goes on to tell us of his time leave to join the army and being deployed to the Korean War. Upon his arrival back home, he can truly sense the difference regarding ethnicity, for as a veteran he was still expected to buy goods from a back window instead of being able to walk in a store.
