Bio: Julie Sommerfeldt has been Manager of Rare Books & Special Collections at the University of Sydney Library since 2016 and prior to that was a Book Conservator at the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford, UK. She gained a Masters of Conservation Studies, specialising in Books & Library Materials, in the UK in 2010.
Summary: Archives and Library Special Collections contain material in different formats, produced with a wide variety of materials, techniques, and skill levels, with age ranges that may span many centuries. Their physical condition can vary considerably. Competing budget priorities are a reality – in this context, what can be done to care for these collections appropriately in order to pass them on to future generations? In this session Julie will discuss the differences between interventive and preventive conservation activities and summarise activities to consider, including many that are cost-effective and do not require dedicated conservation staff.
