Pressure, a continuous physical force that acts on the surface area of an object, is defined as the force per unit area. This experiment demonstrates the effects of pressure using an empty can and a water bath. Approximately 100 cubic centimeters of water are poured into the can, which is then placed over a lit Bunsen burner. As the temperature rises, the kinetic energy of the particles increases, causing the liquid water to change state and become a gas. Despite this transformation, the can retains its shape as the pressure inside remains equal to the external pressure. Eventually, steam becomes visible leaving the can. Once steam production begins, the can is promptly and safely removed from the heat, and its lid is tightly secured before being placed into iced water. The cooling effect of the iced water causes any remaining steam in the can to condense, resulting in a rapid decrease in internal pressure. Consequently, the external pressure exceeds the internal pressure, leading to the can's implosion. This experiment vividly illustrates the potentially destructive force of pressure, as well as its valuable applications.
