The experiment to determine the Young's modulus of a metal wire involves measuring how much the wire stretches when a load is applied. Young's modulus is a measure of the stiffness of a material and is defined as the ratio of stress (force per unit area) to strain (deformation per unit length).
Apparatus Required
To conduct this experiment, you will need the following apparatus:
A metal wire of known length and diameter
A clamp stand to secure the wire
A set of weights to apply varying loads
A ruler or Vernier scale to measure the extension of the wire
A micrometer to measure the diameter of the wire accurately
Procedure
Setup: Secure the metal wire vertically using a clamp stand. Ensure that the wire is straight and free from kinks.
Initial Measurements: Measure the initial length of the wire using a ruler. Record the diameter of the wire at several points using a micrometer to ensure uniformity.
Applying Load: Attach a known weight to the end of the wire. Start with a small weight and gradually increase it, noting the amount of extension each time.
Measuring Extension: After each weight is added, measure the new length of the wire and calculate the extension by subtracting the original length from the new length.
Repeat: For accuracy, repeat the measurements for each weight multiple times and take the average extension for each load.
By plotting a stress-strain graph, the slope of the linear portion of the graph will give you Young's modulus.
