Throughout the majority of U.S. history, Presidents have typically sought reelection, viewing a second term as an opportunity to continue their policies and fulfill their political agenda. Various Presidents never sought a second term due to tragic events that prevented them from running again; however there are several Presidents who chose to serve only one term.
Some pledged a single term to strengthen party unity, limit executive power, or simply because of a terrible approval rating. Others made this choice due to personal reasons like advancing age or health concerns. Changing political landscapes and shifts in public opinion played a role as well in some cases, as was the case after Andrew Jackson’s presidency.
