Hayes' presidency was a transitional period between the end of the Reconstruction Era and the beginning of the Gilded Age. He is perhaps most well known for being at the center of the one of the most contentious elections in United States history. Lesser remembered, though not insignificant, were the issues he faced once in office such as Civil Service reform and worker strikes in cities throughout the United States.
Prior to his election to the presidency Hayes served as congressman and then governor of Ohio. He was perhaps most well-known for his service in Union Army during the Civil War where he would serve alongside other notable figures such as Ulysses S. Grant and William McKinley.
Though United States history is littered with many presidents with tragic personal lives Hayes was not one of them. He grew up in a loving and well structured family, had a long and fulfilling marriage and remained optimistic and involved in social causes until his last days when he died of complications from a heart attack in 1893.
