Here are ten quick bits of trivia about America's eighth president, Martin Van Buren - the second Democrat. Van Buren was actually the founder of the Democratic Party as he was the one who rallied various political coalitions together in Andrew Jackson's favor. If anyone had the skills to found a political party that still exists nearly two hundred years later it would be the Sly Fox or Little Magician.
Van Buren was known for his savvy political manuerving making him a valuable political ally to Jackson, but also detestable and shady figure to others like John C. Calhoun. Despite his behind the scenes skills, Van Buren wasn't as effective in the executive office and was only elected to a single term.
He was the third of four incumbent vice presidents elected to the presidency. The two before him were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson and the one after him was George H. W. Bush, the VPOTUS of Ronald Reagan. Despite being mostly forgotten today, Van Buren's political work still has a large impact on the United States to this day.
