There were three United States Presidents who died on Independence Day. The death of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson came on July 4th of 1826 -just hours apart. It was the 50th anniversary Indepedence Day July 4th. James Monroe died five years later on July 4, 1831.
John Adams final words were, "Thomas Jefferson survives." The 90 year old Adams was referring to the fact that the nation would at least still have Jefferson to guide it.
The two were old friends and enemies. In early life they had a strong friendship that would break apart during the nation's formative years. After the election of 1800 which saw the election of President Thomas Jefferson the two would cut off all communication.
Eventually John Adams reached out to Jefferson via a letter and the two regularly wrote letters to each other. The John Adams and Thomas Jefferson correspondance has been noted as one of the greatest friendships between former presidents.
James Monroe's death also came Independence Day, though it was years later. In his final days Monroe lamented that he wouldn't be able to meet with his good friend James Madison.
