20th President James Garfield is one of the lesser remembered in the collective United States memory. He served a brief term in 1881 after winning the presidential election of 1880. He was assassinated in mid 1881, but still managed some accomplishments in his presidency.
Other presidents such as Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson and Andrew Jackson came from poverty but perhaps none as poor as Garfield. In his early years he was poor and raised by a single mother. Bullied and mocked by his peers he found solace in reading books which became his means of bettering himself.
He'd work his way up from blue collar jobs to becoming a teacher to entering law school. Connections he made in law school eventually earned him a position as the Senator of Ohio in 1860. However, in the wake of the American Civil War he joined the army and fought in what he saw was a Holy War against slavery. He fought alongside notable figures such as Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant and in the Battle of Shiloh among many others.
In his early political career he was a radical repubican which often put him at odds with Abraham Lincoln. The two would find common ground, and later Garfield would find himself in Lincoln's position of needing to compromise.
Garfield contended in the Republican era which was a time of Civil War in the Party with figures such Roscoe Conkling leading the Stalwarts.
Eventually he was elected president. Though his agenda was ambitious his time was cut short as three months into his presidency he was shot by madman and assassin Charles Guiteau.
